Origin:Jack Russell Terriers were first named after a clergyman named Rev. John Russell, who originally developed them. They were used as a small game hunting dog particularly for red fox and also digging the quarry out of its den in the mid-1800s. On English hunts, the dogs needed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds, but purposes for a short legged variety were found also.

The breed then morphed into three lines, the Parson, the Russell as well as the Jack Russell. Differences in these three breeds include leg length, working purpose, activity level and body shape. While the Parson and Russell are recognized breed, the Jack Russell Terrier is not yet recognized by the AKC.
