The Gambling Support Group is here for anyone looking for support in dealing with Gambling addiction problems. Addicts or friends and family of addicts can join the Gambling Support Groups here for free. A four-week support group is available for family members of those individuals experiencing a gambling problem. Individuals will be booked for an initial assessment in the Problem Gambling Service and then referred to the problem gambling support group for family members, which runs four times per year. Recovery from gambling addiction is not an event. It is an ongoing process of change that is best accomplished with the support of others who share similar experiences or beliefs. Recovery support groups are effective because people dealing with the same problem are able to offer support and understanding to each other, and those with longer recovery experience are able to give practical guidance to those who are struggling.

12 Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon, Narcotics Anonymous and Nar-Anon, and many others, have proven to be successful for millions of people recovering from substance addictions. Likewise, Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon provide a 12 Step framework of recovery support for problem gamblers and their family and friends.

Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous (GA) is a peer support group based on the same 12-step principles as Alcoholics Anonymous. Membership is free and is open to anyone who has a desire to stop gambling. Upon entering the Gamblers Anonymous program, new members receive a warm welcome from others who have experienced the pain of a gambling addiction, and often discover for the first time that they are not alone in this problem. Members gather for group meetings to share their experience strength and hope in order to solve their common problem. Participation in GA is voluntary and individuals can remain anonymous by identifying themselves by only their first name.

Gam-Anon

Gam-Anon is a separate 12-step support group for family members, friends, and anyone who is affected by someone’s gambling problem. In Gam-Anon, members experience relief from anxiety by accepting the fact that they are not responsible for someone else’s gambling problem. The energy wasted in attempts to stop loved ones from gambling is channeled into more useful methods of problem solving. Members are encouraged to use the support and problem solving suggestions of the program to rebuild their lives and learn how to give appropriate aid to the gambler. Like Gamblers Anonymous, participation in Gam-Anon is voluntary and free, and individuals can remain anonymous by identifying themselves by only their first name.

GAM-ANON

Gam-Anon is a 12 Step self-help fellowship of men and women who have been affected by the gambling problem of another. We understand as perhaps few can. We are familiar with worry and sleepless nights and promises made only to be broken.

We may have become fearful and uncertain as to how to cope with the deterioration in our lives and our relationships, the financial problems, and the debts caused by the gambling. We know that living with the effects of another's gambling can often be too devastating to bear without help.

With the help of Gam-Anon, we find our way back to a normal way of thinking and living, whether or not our loved ones continue to gamble. We believe that a change in our attitudes is of boundless helps to us as well as to our gamblers.

Gam-Anon is not a religious organization or a counseling agency. It is not a treatment center nor is it allied with any organization offering such services. No dues or fees are required.
